Riding horseback through the mountains and spotting wildlife in the natural habitat sounds like a dream. In the South Chilcotin Mountains, however, it’s a reality.

From a grizzly bear grazing in the meadows to nimble Bighorn sheep navigating their way along the high alpine ridge tops, these mountains are teeming with iconic Canadian wildlife. The indescribable beauty of observing wild animals as they live and thrive in the heart of the wilderness is something that will stay with you your whole life through.

The South Chilcotin Mountains, which are uniquely positioned in a transition zone, are home to an incredibly diverse array of Canadian wildlife. Grizzly bears, black bears, moose, bald eagles, cougars, wolves, mountain goats, California Bighorn Sheep, grouse, marmots, and mule deer all flourish in the diverse terrain of these mountains.

By riding horseback, you have the flexibility and maneuverability to traverse the contrasting terrains that these animals inhabit. That means you can spot regal moose tramping through the willow forests and black bears grazing in meadows that blanket the valley floors. On these eXperience, you can even follow mountain goat tracks up towards the north facing bluffs, something that other forms of transportation would rarely allow.

Traveling through the mountains on these Cayuse horses, desendants of wild horses, and sharing the environment with such magnificent creatures is an eXperience unlike any other.

Day 1

Early morning departure from Vancouver aboard private shuttle. Midday arrival and lunch at the farm.

Horse Riding Orientation - Meet you horse, fit saddles, and practice horsemanship skills. Introductory trail ride along Gun Creek.

Dinner and review of trip details with your guides. Map orientation highlighting the trails and terrain you’ll explore throughout your journey. Repack your personal gear into mountain duffel bags. Overnight in farm's accommodations.

 

Day 2

Breakfast at the farm.

Watch your guides pack and saddle your horses, or get an hands-on orientation before you ride out to camp. Scouting for and viewing wildlife throughout the ride.

Break for lunch in a wildflower meadow.

Arrive at mountain camp.

Relax or join your guides in leading the horses to their grazing meadows. Dinner and overnight at camp.

 

Day 3

Breakfast at camp before packing up and head out. Ride out to new wildlife viewing locations. Every twist in the trail brings new opportunities for wildlife sightings, so keep your camera ready. Break for lunch.

Explore striking landscapes, like alpine basins and towering ridgelines, as you ride back to the farm. Arrival and dinner at the farm.

Relax around the fireplace or step onto the deck for spectacular star-gazing. Overnight in farm's accommodations.

Day 4

Leisurely farm breakfast. Bareback horse riding lessons. Take aim with target shooting instruction and practice.

Farewell lunch at the farm. Depart for Vancouver, Surrey, arriving in the evening.

Break for lunch. Continue riding through the mountains, where each twist in the trail brings new opportunities to spot wildlife.

Arrival and dinner at camp. Overnight at camp.

 

Day 6

Camp breakfast.

Pack up and head out on the last ride before you return to the farm.

Break for lunch atop a mountain pass or in an alpine meadow

Arrival and dinner at the farm. Relax around the fireplace or step onto the deck for spectacular star-gazing. Overnight in farm's accommodations.

Day 7

Leisurely farm breakfast. Bareback horse riding lessons. Take aim with target shooting instruction and practice.

Farewell lunch at the farm. Depart for Vancouver, Surrey, arriving in the evening.

Please note, this eXperience is subject to the unpredictable weather and terrain conditions that come with a mountainous environment. And while we do our best to stick to the itinerary, there are times when the current conditions and needs of the group require us to adjust schedules, campsites, etc. This is part of any true wilderness experience, however, and we are well equipped to adapt the adventure to changing conditions.

5% GST applies, 5% Wilderness Stewardship Contribution Surcharge applies,

this eXperience requires a basic level of fitness. Walking downhill for more than 30 minutes shouldn't be a problem for you. Good footwear with ankle support is highly recommended.
